Introduction: Rachel Janovsky in A Nutshell

Thank you American Diabetes Association Chicago Chapter for selecting me as the 2014 American Diabetes Association Northern Illinois Youth Advocate. I am very excited to be working with you this year! As my first post, I thought it would be appropriate to include background information about myself.

I will never forget August 23, 2004. Instead of enjoying my first day of third grade, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I did not understand how it would affect my life at the time but eventually I realized that I needed to make some lifestyle changes. My diet was changed from fast food to organic fruits and vegetables. In fifth grade, I made my biggest positive lifestyle change. That was the year I received my first insulin pump. Now, I could manage my insulin by just a click of a button. By getting more diabetes education, I was able to easily overcome obstacles.

I realized I wanted to help other diabetics by educating them. I started volunteering for the American Diabetes Association four years ago as a camp counselor at Camp Discovery. Every summer, I cherish the moments of working with young children who have type 1 diabetes and now it is my favorite part of summer vacation. My favorite part of camp is always teaching the campers how to give themselves an insulin injection (we practice with using a saline solution, of course). At first, the campers are really scared and nervous but with a little bit of encouragement, they overcome their fear. I love the look of pride on the campers' faces.

This love for Camp Discovery is what made me apply for the Local Youth Advocate position. The American Diabetes Association is a driving force in diabetes education and fundraising for diabetes research. I am honored to represent such a wonderful organization.

My plan for this year is to be involved with promoting American Diabetes Association events and encourage living a happy and healthy lifestyle. Every week, I will post updates on American Diabetes Association Events, diabetes research progress, and tips on how to manage a healthy daily routine.
